- Challenge:
- The works of honorary professor Jao Tsung-i are the key actor of this important ceremony and mini exhibition, how to identify a
representable visual element that can best telling the story of this renowned sinology scholar?
- What secondary visual effect that can create a space for his work but not become the main actor?
- The unique calligraphy style of professor Jao Tsung-i should be the best element for the title. However, since he is passed away,
and he is so reowned that it is impossible to ask him to write it. The typefaces in the internet is not so organic and because my role
of design in this project should be a facilitator instead of a creator, redesign is not appropriate. What can I do?
- Process:
- Ask and discuss with the curator to perform research in Professor Jao's painting.
- Try different kinds of brushes to create a secondary effect. Cold colour should be avoid since this is a happy ceremony but no need
to use a "traditional Chinese red" because it is not Chinese New Year.
- Research on the characteristic of Professor Jao's calligraphy style.
- Solution:
- This is a happy ceremony, an orange Leaf of Lotus is founded in one of Professor Jao's Painting. After discuss with the art
administrator, the Lotus is a best representation of Professor Jao's works because of the repetitions in his paintings and Chinese
people can easily related the Lotus to a poem that " A lotus born from the dirty mud but not polluted". The elegant character
behind the Lotus also echoes with the sinology prize of "Prix Stanislas Julien" given to Professor Jao - in which "Julien" is translate
as "Lotus of Confucian".
- Transparent ripples of water are chosen because it can create an environment for displaying the Lotus flowers without noisy
colours. A friendly warm orange-red is selected as the theme colour.
- By comparing the calligraphy works of Professor Jao, we discover the words in the title can be founded separately in different
works! This is a best solution to show the uniqueness of Professor Jao! I use technical method to trace the words out and make
adjustment on the colour, size and position. As a result, a Jao's style title born! Colleagues enjoys it and it gives an good answer to
guests' enquiries of visual appearance.
